Lecture
Humans as Organisms: Starting Point of the Transformations of the Human
Presenter
Professor Bai Shu-Nong, School of Life Sciences, Peking University
· Focuses on plant biology
· Curious about what is the core unit of plant development, why plant organs appear sequentially, and why plants always bloom sooner or later
· Coined the concept of “plant developmental unit” in 1993, the concept of “sexual reproduction cycle” in 2013, and redefined the concept of plant developmental program as “double-ring mode” in 2015.
Key Discussions
The 3 unavoidable questions of the transformations of the human:
· Surviving as a species, do we really need such a huge population?
· Living as an individual, do we really need longevity?
· Are humans simply organisms?
We will start from a basic fact of“the human as an organism” to reinterpret the history of the human transformations. Following the logic of life, we will propose a new perspective for combing and reconstructing the conceptual frameworks of human cognition, and exploring the future of human transformation.
